Introduction: Midwifery and Neonatal Care
This course covers the management of midwifery conditions during labour, and postpartum. The course aims at enabling a learner to assess, recognize, and manage both normal and high-risk midwifery conditions.  The course also focuses a learner on the management of women and their newborns before, during, and after surgical obstetric procedures/operations like cesarean sections (C/S). The learner should be able to assess, diagnose, make management plans, and provide care (using Nursing Process) for normal and high-risk midwifery conditions for mothers and their babies. 

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course the students, will be able to
  • Describe the physiological mechanisms, and stages of labour  
  • Demonstrate competence in assessment, recognition and monitoring of labour using a partograph   
  • Identify high-risk conditions during delivery, and postpartum.
  • Demonstrate competence in management of common maternal and neonatal complications and emergencies during labour and postpartum
  • Describe the indications of Caesarian section, pre-operative and post-operative management of Caesarian section.  
  • Describe physical, psychosocial and physiological changes during puerperium 
  • Demonstrate competence in management of common minor problems during puerperium 
  • Demonstrate competence in assessment, diagnosis and management of neonatal conditions
