Introduction: Mental Health Nursing
The course is designed to expose Nursing students to various procedures and processes of Nursing patients/clients with mental health problems. It also equips students with the skills and practices in mental health Nursing.
Learners will further gain clinical experiences in community and acute care settings are designed for students to engage in individual and group strategies that promote and maintain mental health. 

Course objective
By the end of this unit, students will be able to;
  • Discuss the management of mental health problems.
  • Discuss the forensic aspects of mental health.
  • Describe the different psychiatric syndromes.
  • Discuss mental sub-normalities.
  • Apply relevant treatment methods to psychiatric conditions.
  • Management of patients with different psychiatric emergencies.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course unit students should be able to:
  • Apply concepts used in mental health. 
  • Apply the Nursing process in the management of patients with mental health problems.
  • Recognize and manage patients with mental health problems using different treatment modalities.
  • Appropriately refer patients for management 
Competences
The Nursing student shall have the following competencies:
  • Creates therapeutic nurse-patient/client relationship.
  • Applies the Nursing process in the management of psychiatric patients/clients.
  • Applies mental health interventions in the Nursing care of mental patients.
  • Integrates mental health into existing PHC services.
  • Students will acquire knowledge skills and attitudes necessary for understanding, managing and referral of clients with mental disorders.
